Hubpages Hub SEO

If your just getting started in using web 2.0 sites to promote you own websites my fist advice is to start with Squidoo Lenses. The reason being that it is a little harder to get a dofollow link out of Hubpages Hubs. Now with that said, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth doing Hubpages, it’s just going to take a little more work to make it worthwhile. Because of this there is a little less spam on Hubpages.

DoFollow links – Hubpages

One of the first things you will likely notice once you have completed your first Hub is any links you put in the hub have the NoFollow rel. That means that the link gives no authority back to the site you are promoting. While it is possible that the traffic may be enough to justify the link, that is rather unlikely. So what does it take to make the link Dofollow? Increase your hubs hubscore!

What is Hubscore?

Hubscore is the measurement of how good Hubpages thinks your hub is. You will find the hubs hubscore next to the title of the hub when you visit the hub page. You will also notice that next to your profile image is another hubscore, this one is an average of all your hubs.

Here is the Hitch! In order for the links on a page to be DoFollow the hubscore needs to be above about 75, or the Author score needs to be above 75 and the individual hubs above about 50 (either way). This is Hubpages way of weeding out the spam. You have to be willing to put some effort into your hub in order to make it worthwhile. And not only do you have to do it once, but you have to continue to put forth effort in order to keep the hubscore up.

Increasing Hubscore

Hubscore is a can be increase in a number of ways.

  • Content Quality: Better quality content will increase your hubscore, but it will not keep your score up. Along with good quality, you need to regularly add content to your hub. For that reason it is better not to exhaust all of your ideas for a hub right away. Write 2-3 good modules of text and try to add a new module on a regular basis. Don’t get too carried away with adding a bunch of links yet. It looks spammy and won’t do you much good anyway.
  • Hub Interaction: Being part of the community helps. Rate other hubs you like. Also, Hubpages has a tool that helps you to take keywords from the text of your hub and link to other hubs. Hubpages likes it when you do this and will increase your hubscore for being a team player. Don’t just link to your own hubs, try to link to other high scoring hubs.
  • Hub traffic: Yes, that means getting links to your hub. Really this is the only long term way to keep your hubscore up. Likely you will not be able to keep adding content to the hub forever, traffic from the search engines will help to keep your hub scoring above that magic number of 75. You can also increase your traffic by having the right tags. Choose tags that people are likely to use while searching on hubpages, but are not so difficult to achieve that you are unlikely to ever reach to first or second page of results. Much the same as Google searches, people normally only click on the first few results in the list.
  • Choose the right modules: Other Hubbers are also looking for ways to promote their hubs, give them a reason to come to yours. The interactive modules allow them to increase your content while linking back to their hub profile. Kind of an “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine” type of thing. One that same line don’t forget to search for hubs that you can add a comment to. Increasing your profile helps to increase your hubscore.
  • Promote your rss feed: Add a link to your rss feed to other sites you own. Or display the feed in a reader to give your sites some additional content. This is a good way to keep you hubscores above 75.
  • Use the Hubpages Widget on your blogs and other sites: This widget links back to your top hubs as well as to your profile page, helping to ensure you continue to get new traffic to your hubs.

Hubpages Rules

There are a few rules you need to follow.

  • One big one is you can only have two links to a single domain per hub. Anything more than that can look a little spammy anyway so that is not really a bad rule.
  • Only use unique content. Don’t use the same content you have posted somewhere else. Also not a bad rule. Duplicate content will not rank well for Google and it then become close to impossible to get enough traffic for the Hub to keep above the 75 mark without constant work.

Making money with HubPages

Don’t forget to at least add your Google affiliate Code to your hubpages account. While you will probably not get rich off your hubs every little bit helps right?

To add your Google code you will need to click the “signup” link next to Google in your affiliate settings within your hubpage account. You will then add you Google account email address, last 5 digits of the phone you used to sign up for Google and the Zip code of the account you use to sign up with Google. Hubpages will then get your Google affiliate code. You will then need to log into Google giving Hubpages access to grab information from your account. Google only allows report information for this one source and the ability to get ad code, so the rest of your account and information is still safe.

As with most forms of SEO, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Hubpages should be only one of many different tools you use to promote your websites. Spread your efforts out so that you do not get too many links from one source.
