Glossary Entry

Term:  Reciprocal Links     Acronym: -
Definition: Reciprocal links are links that you have to another website in trade for them linking back to you. Often website owners will add a link to a website that they think might be interested in trading a link with them. The owner then contacts the owner of the prospective site stating that they have a link established to their site and asking if the webmaster will add a link back to the asking webmasters site.

At one time this was a very common way to acquire additional links. Google is now discouraging this form of acquiring links. Although there appears to be no penalty for having these links, they may in time be devalued to the point they are no longer worth the effort.

Reciprocal links differ from one-way incoming links. One-way links are links that another website has to your website, where you do not have a link pointing back. One-way links are the preferred link method of the search engines.
