Term:
Link Bait
Definition:
Link Baiting boils down to creating content people will want to link to. There are a veritety of methods that can be used to do this.
- Lists - pretty much what you are reading now. These are quick points people can scan through. They often come in the form of Top 10 (or some other number) lists
- Comedy - people love to laugh. A funny photo, drawing or other image will often have people linking back to it to show others.
- Some free Service - Free is good, people like free, and when what you are giving away is good enough then people will link to it.
- A free product - the same as above. Free is a great way to get people to come to your site.
- Controversy - having people disagree with you is not always bad. When people blog about what you say, even when they are disagreeing, this has the tendency to get people to come to your site to see why the person bothered to trash you.
- Being first to report something - early bird gets the worm and often the first one to report get the links.
The best way to get natural links is to make sure your site has something worth linking to. This is often a matter of quality over quantity. Of course the next step would be to make sure people read it or know about it. This is where some of the social media sites come in so handy. Twitter, stumbleupon and other similar sites will get your new link bait seen so you will get those link.
