Glossary Entry

Term:  Domain Names     Acronym: -
Definition: Domain names can have a number of different extensions, common ones are com, net, org, edu, and gov. When you use a domain name to go to a web site, a DNS server translates that name to an IP address and you are sent to the proper host server to view the site.

Choice of a domain name for your website is very important. A bad choice will make you name hard to remember, and may affect your ranking by the search engines. It is important to choose a domain name that reflects the content of your site, contains keywords for your site and will be easy for your visitors to remember. Even though companies like Google don’t follow these rules, it is normally best to try to pick a name that does.

There are many places to check for a domain name availability, including Yahoo and Go Daddy. The price for registration can vary, at the time of this writing Yahoo was registering domains for $2.99 a year, more often you will see $7.99 to $9.99 registrations.
